Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Questioning
The University Health Center is committed to ensuring that LGBTQIA+ students receive the highest quality medical care in a safe and respectful space.
We provide confidential and individualized care for all your health and well-being needs. We make every effort to provide inclusive sexual and reproductive healthcare services, easy access to mental health services, and support for all orientations*, gender identities, and gender expressions, regardless of sex assigned at birth.
*We intentionally use the word orientations to encompass all sexual, non-sexual, romantic and non-romantic orientations. Orientations can be fluid at various points in one’s life.
Visiting a healthcare provider can be stressful for anyone, but for some of us, that feeling can be magnified by concerns about discrimination or being misunderstood. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, trans and non-binary patients often come to us with other identities that impact their health, well-being, and experience of receiving healthcare. We continue to educate our team and improve systems to welcome and serve all patients, inclusive to LGBTQIA+ students and marginalized identities.
All UHC services are confidential. Although members of the LGBTQIA+ community have many health needs in common with everyone else, there are some unique care concerns that are important to discuss with a healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider will ask you questions related to your visit, health history, health behavior, and experiences. It’s important that you feel comfortable sharing your answers openly and honestly.
If you need someone to talk to, or would like assistance with connecting to resources, please do not hesitate to call the Health Promotion Department and connect with our Sexual Health and Healthy Relationships Coordinator at 706-542-8690.

Questions to Ask Your Provider
When meeting with a new healthcare provider, start with asking, “What experience do you have caring for LGBTQIA+ patients?” If your healthcare provider is not familiar with this area, ask if there is another provider who is more experienced. Developing a trusting relationship with your healthcare provider is vital to quality medical care.
